DECO TREND GUIDE

Architect Thomas Mang in DECO HOME – as an expert in the design of patio and garden areas.

From an architect’s perspective, the interior designer talks about the perfect composition of outdoor furniture, fabrics and accessories under the open sky.

Has the design of patios and gardens changed?

Yes, outdoor spaces have taken on a whole new significance in recent years. The pandemic and the long, warm summers have sparked a desire in many people to extend their living space outdoors.

An area that has always been somewhat neglected in Germany. But in my view, it deserves just as much attention as the rooms inside the house.

What exactly are customers looking for?

The main priority is often to create functional zones: a lovely dining area, a lounge, perhaps a fire pit – retreats in nature where you can get together with friends or relax.

And why shouldn’t these places be cosy too? Fabrics in the form of cushions and upholstery are just as suitable for this as curtains. To me, they still have a certain element of surprise outdoors because you don’t see them very often.

Outdoor rugs are just as big a topic. I also recommend combining different manufacturers when it comes to garden furniture. The variety of materials then creates a cosy overall impression.

What sort of fabrics are used outdoors?

Many manufacturers now use high-tech fibres for their outdoor collections. The fabrics are easy to care for, washable and resistant to sunlight.

You could basically leave them outside, but of course the cushions are better protected in bad weather if they are covered. And make sure you choose high-quality, outdoor-suitable fillings. After all, even the best fabric is useless if the filling underneath goes mouldy.

Extra tips for creating more atmosphere?

The right lighting, even for outdoors. Opt for lower light intensity, no more than 2700 Kelvin, so that everything appears in a beautiful, warm glow.
