BUNTE HOME STORY
Two Generations, one vocation – Werner Mang and Thomas Mang in a feature in BUNTE: The plastic surgeon and the architect discuss the special bond between famous fathers and their sons …
Fifty-three years ago, Cat Stevens wrote a song. In it, he poignantly explores the contradictions found in many father-son relationships.
An issue that remains just as relevant today as it was in 1970. “It is often the sons of dominant, successful fathers who struggle to stand on their own two feet and achieve success themselves,” says Werner Mang, 73, Germany’s leading cosmetic surgeon and father of a son and a daughter.
Gloria Mang, 37, has since joined the management team at the renowned Bodenseeklinik. Her brother Thomas, 35, on the other hand, has forged his own path: he works very successfully as an architect and interior designer in the luxury sector.
Architect & Interior Designer
BUNTE visited him and his father at their flat – his home and, at the same time, a showroom for client appointments. These include, among others, the ‘King of Gastronomy’ Michael Käfer and football presenter Laura Wontorra.
Other well-known figures for whom he works in Munich, Austria and Switzerland do not wish to be named publicly – and the same applies to his father’s famous patients.
Thomas Mang knew as early as the age of 15 what career path he wanted to pursue. “Even as a child, I was always rearranging everything at home and replanning it.”
Thomas Mang Studio for Architecture
He has just set up his own business, Thomas Mang Studio. What drives him?
“As an architect and interior designer, you create things that last a lifetime. What’s more, the creative process is always fresh and new, and I can put into practice the ideas and inspiration I gain from travelling, for example. But the greatest reward of all is seeing our clients’ satisfaction and happiness.”
Werner Mang says: “I’m incredibly proud of my children. Yet until they were about five years old, I didn’t really know I had children, because I was working day and night. Thomas has inherited my entrepreneurial spirit, and picked up the other traits from my wife Sybille – creativity, diplomatic skills and a love of art and beautiful things.”
Thomas Mang smiles and says: “That really is a perfect mix.” In this case: Father and Son – and Mother.

5 Tips for Interior Design
1 Be bold with colour! Have the courage to paint a wall in a dark shade or a colour you really like.
2 Take a look in your wardrobe! Let the colours you find there inspire your interior design.
3 Mix old, antique furniture with new pieces. This creates a sense of contrast.
4 Say ‘yes’ to curtains and rugs to create a cosy atmosphere.
5 Use a variety of light sources. A mix of different lighting creates a lovely atmosphere and really brings out the best in your home.
