Jewel by the lake
The new Schützinger Höfe on Lindau’s Hintere Insel – a unique venue right on the lake.
Leo von Klenze (1784–1864) is considered the most important representative of German classicism, having built, among others, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and the New Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. The redevelopment of the area on Lake Constance designed by von Klenze in the 19th century is therefore a very special project for Thomas Mang Studio.
Innovative architecture under heritage protection
The historic premises of the former Royal Bavarian State Railways cover an area of 5,000 square metres and include locomotive sheds, workshop buildings and a peat shed.
The focus is on the heritage-protected main building. The characteristic brick architecture has been preserved and is contrasted by light-flooded new buildings with black wooden facades.
Reconciling the city’s history with the advantages of innovative architecture was and remains the challenge in this fascinating project. A great deal of time was therefore invested in carefully researching the ideal building materials.
Townhouses, residential units & shops
The signature style of Thomas Mang is evident in this project, which is based on a holistic architectural approach. The inner courtyard is designed as a natural oasis; flats and elegant townhouses will be harmoniously arranged to form a coherent ensemble.
With commercial space for shops and restaurants, the historic area on Lindau’s Hintere Insel is also set to become a public meeting place. Lined with trees, on the shores of Lake Constance.
‘With the new Schützinger Höfe, we are not only transforming a historic building for the future. The property also makes a contribution to the urban development of the Hintere Insel district, in coordination with the city of Lindau,’ says architect Thomas Mang.
